April 2010 - 1 Bedroom Botanical Worcester
This was our first trip to the Turks and Caicos and we had a great time. The hotel is on the other side of Grace Bay, a good fifteen minute walk to Grace Bay centre which has the nice stores and grocery store. Bikes can be rented from the hotel for two hours at a time so you can use those should you want to stock up on a few essentials. I would recommend using the kitchen a few nights as it can be expensive to eat out every night. The restaurants are top notch but pricey. We went to Turtle Cove one day and it was well worth the taxi drive, the ocean was calm and the tide low so the reef was very close to shore, we saw the fish immediately and swam for a while around the many sets of reefs. We walked back along Grace Bay Beach and it took us about an hour with a few swim stops on the way to cool off.
March 2010 - Studio Oceanfront Gulf Breeze, Florida
We stayed at 2 different hotels on the island. The Sands cost $100 less, and was a full suite with ocean view. The restaurant was much better, the food and service was better, and it was almost half the price. At the Royal West Indies we paid for an "ocean front", but it was actually an ocean "view." We paid much more than at the Sands and felt the value was MUCH less. I doubt that we will return to the RWI resort in the future for these reasons.
August 2009 - 2 Bedroom Oceanfront Connecticut
This hotel is slightly smaller and less obtrusive than many on Grace Bay, and is better for it. The beach at this point is wider and more open than hotels located to the west of the Bay. Kayaks and Hobie Cats were invariably available for guest use and in good condition. The separate pools and hot tub provided a welcome break from the beach. The beach staff were outstandingly helpful and courteous, as were all the staff at the hotel; a real plus. Unlike an earlier reviewer we found all the staff to be friendly and helpful. Rooms were of a good size, quiet and well equipped meaning we could easily self cater for breakfast and lunch. The local supermarket is a five minute bike ride and provides a good selection of items, if not everything. Prices are higher than in the USA but not totally out of order. Having taken a taxi ride to the larger IGA supermarket we decided that it was a waste of time/taxi fare and far preferred the bike excursion. We found Hemingway's restaurant over rated with poor service. All other restaurants, especially Mangos (our kids' favorite), were excellent and Da Conch Shack is a must visit but take cash! We will back before the islands become over developed.
March 2009 - Studio Botanical Vie Ohio
Stayed at Royal West Indies for a week in March 2009. Staff was very helpful and very friendly, accomocations were great. Very clean and well maintained. Lovely grounds. Enjoyed the use of sailboat and kayak as well as wonderful beach. Close enough to walk to most places. Will probably rent a car for a few days when we go back in 2010
February 2009 - Studio Beachfront Concord, Massachusetts
Very well kept grounds, lovely gardens and beautiful traditional looking buildings. The beach and Grace Bay is some of the nicest I have seen and was the jewel of our trip. We stayed in a ocean front Studio and just loved watching the sun set every night! We found the staff and locals to be easy going if not even a little too laid back, but it was never a really big issue. We enjoyed our time at the resort.
January 2009 - 2 Bedroom Botanical Val Berde, CA
Our family has just returned from a wonderful trip to Provo staying at the Royal West Indies. We really enjoyed the ambience and the colonial architecture was very suiting for this beautiful environment. Our suite was lovely and of a good size. The gardens are so well kept and the grounds added to such a relaxing atmosphere. The location was perfect and there were shops and grocery very close by which was very convenient. The beach was lovely and we enjoyed exploring this wonderful island. There were also bikes on hand for our grandchildren to use as well as water sports. We had a memorable time and would not hesitate in returning to this resort.
November 2008 - Bero Beach, Florida
This was our first time in Turks and Caicos and many people have told us what a wonderful place it is and now we can see why. We went for a romantic getaway for a week and stayed at the Royal West Indies Resort. The resort was perfect and the beach was to die for. Our studio was very spacious and the view was spectacular. The only complaint we had was there was no hot stove, just a microwave; this being said it was a minor detail. The location was so peaceful and quiet, yet is close to many shops and restaurants, which added to the convenience of it all. We had a memorable trip of and we will be returning again soon.
September 2007 - Studio Botanical View Minnesota
Our hotel (Royal West Indies) was both beautiful and a huge disappointment. The value was great, room was huge, pool and grounds were beautiful, restaurant was outstanding, beach was amazing. The staff and the level of service, I am so sorry to say, were very poor. The majority of the staff didn't smile, and almost everyone made us feel like we were an annoyance to them. People were unfriendly, and it really affected our stay. The staff was short with us, and made us feel like we couldn't ask even basic questions. We felt uncomfortable ordering drinks, food, asking any questions at all. We expected much, much more, and will not be returning or recommending the Royal West Indies for that reason alone. Which is so unfortunate, because I feel like it's a beautiful, relatively affordable resort; but I would rather pay more at a different location and have friendly service. My Turks and Caicos staff was wonderful and easy to work with. The only "complaint" I have (which is minor) is that I thought our hotel was just a few hotels down from The Regent Palms, and an easy 20 minute beach walk...when in reality, it was a 45 minutes beachwalk or a $8 cab ride. The bus system was closed for the month, so when we wanted to see all our friends at The Regent Palms, it was an expensive ride, or long walk. We will possibly return to the Turks and Caicos Islands, but it is pretty expensive. Again, our accommodations really tainted our feel of the island. We did have excellent service at most restaurants on the island (besides ours) and at other hotels we visited. Otherwise, we had a good time, and thought the island itself was really gorgeous. The food at all the restaurants was wonderful. We feel we'd recommend Turks and Caicos, but would caution about the high cost and the hotel service, etc.
