September 2007 – Studio Botanical View. Minnesota
Our hotel (Royal West Indies) was both beautiful and a huge disappointment. The value was great, room was huge, pool and grounds were beautiful, restaurant was outstanding, beach was amazing. The staff and the level of service, I am so sorry to say, were very poor. The majority of the staff didn't smile, and almost everyone made us feel like we were an annoyance to them. People were unfriendly, and it really affected our stay. The staff was short with us, and made us feel like we couldn't ask even basic questions. We felt uncomfortable ordering drinks, food, asking any questions at all. We expected much, much more, and will not be returning or recommending the Royal West Indies for that reason alone. Which is so unfortunate, because I feel like it's a beautiful, relatively affordable resort; but I would rather pay more at a different location and have friendly service. My Turks and Caicos staff was wonderful and easy to work with. The only "complaint" I have (which is minor) is that I thought our hotel was just a few hotels down from The Regent Palms, and an easy 20 minute beach walk...when in reality, it was a 45 minutes beachwalk or a $8 cab ride. The bus system was closed for the month, so when we wanted to see all our friends at The Regent Palms, it was an expensive ride, or long walk. We will possibly return to the Turks and Caicos Islands, but it is pretty expensive. Again, our accommodations really tainted our feel of the island. We did have excellent service at most restaurants on the island (besides ours) and at other hotels we visited. Otherwise, we had a good time, and thought the island itself was really gorgeous. The food at all the restaurants was wonderful. We feel we'd recommend Turks and Caicos, but would caution about the high cost and the hotel service, etc.
